New 'Portrait' Category for the 2017-18 Season

At the recent AGM there was general support for a proposal to move ‘Portraits’ from the Open category into a separate, additional category.  The Committee proposes to adopt the proposal for the 2017-18 season, and will review the success or otherwise of the move before adopting the new category long term.

In the coming season there will therefore be three categories for each competition - both Print and Projected. An overall limit of four images across the categories per competition applies as previously, with a maximum three images in any one category:

Set Subject: - there is no change to this category.

Portrait:  This covers any image where the main subject is a person or people who are posing or otherwise acting under the general direction and control of the photographer, whether in a studio or location, lit or otherwise.   ‘Street’ Photography and similar observational/candid images of people are not included in this category, and would remain in the ’Open’ category.

Open: This category includes any image other than those covered by the Portrait category, including ‘Street’ Photography or similar observational/candid images of people where they are not under the direction or control of the photographer.

The decision relating to the appropriate category for ‘People’ pictures is left to the author, based on the guidelines above.  However, should a judge feel that an image has been entered into an inappropriate category they may, at their discretion, mark down the image.

PAGB 'Masters of Print' Competition

Amanda Wright is very excited about a new Print Competition and associated exhibition from the PAGB:

There are three categories:

  • Monochrome Prints
  • Colour Prints
  • Nature Prints

Each author may enter a maximum of five unmounted prints overall (sizes in the Rules - linked below). After closed judging, 50-60 prints will be selected for exhibition, maximum one print per author.  Whilst earlier images are not excluded, the Judges and Selectors will give priority to work which has not already been widely exhibited.  The exhibition prints will be mounted by the PAGB in 60cm x 60cm frames.

Further details

The closing date for on-line entries is Saturday 21st October. The full timetable is here

The Rules

Town Hall Move Postponed (again)

We have been informed by Ealing Town Hall that the Town Hall Redevelopment has been postponed again, and that we are now free to stay until May 31st 2018.  There were only two events scheduled for June 2018, including the AGM which we held successfully this year in the Grange.  The Committee have therefore agreed that we should take up the extended option and effectively now have the whole of the 2017-2018 season in the Town Hall.

We will however continue to pursue options as outlined at the AGM in order to have our new home in place well aheah of the following season starting in September 2018.

Ralph's Funeral - 21st July at Mortlake

Amanda just received this message from Jonah at Northfields CC regarding Ralph Gould.

Dear All,

As many of you know, Ralph Gould sadly passed away last week after a short illness.

His funeral is at Mortlake Crematorium on Friday 21st July at 11:20. (I would suggest arriving a little earlier than that, nearer 11). I spoke with his wife, Pam, today and she extends a warm welcome to members of both Northfields Camera Club and Ealing & Hampshire House Photographic Society. There will be a buffet and drinks afterwards at The Ship which is a very short walk from the Crematorium. I understand that parking is available behind and it is possible to leave cars at the Crematorium for the drinks afterwards.

I hope some of you may be able to attend.

This Year's Winners

The winners of this year's aggregate competitions were announced at the AGM, this year held in the pub due to the town hall being used for the general election.

The projected open was won by Karen Helle. Second was Mike Lloyd, third Shaun Hodge.

The projected set subject was won by Irena Farrell.  Sadly she was not present to receive her prize. Paul Mason came second, followed by Kristin Mason in third.

The print open was won by Shaun Hodge, followed by Karen Helle and Paul Mason.

Printed set subject was shared by Shaun Hodge and Paul Mason in joint first place. Emmanuel Pappadopoulos was third.

The Switch trophy, voted by the previous three winners for service to the club, was won by Dennis Durack.

Congratulations to them all.
