North West Fed Round 1: Amanda Wright Reports

On 27th October, just two days after the first round of the Rosebowl, EHHPS hosted the first round of the NWFed with visitors Imagez. The competition was confidently judged by Paul Burwood.

Usually there would be three clubs in our group but sadly XRR who had been allocated to our group, made a last minute decision not to compete in external competitions, indeed the club are no longer meeting. This means instead of the usual 3 rounds with fewer images submitted per club in each round we now only have two rounds but are submitting 8 prints and 8 PDI’s each in each round.

Print Section:

As for the Rosebowl, the scoring was incredibly close, with scores ranging from 16-20 in the print section.

Both Imagez’ prints took the stars.

Rosebowl Round 1: Amanda Wright Reports

The external Competition Season is now well and truly underway.

On 25th Oct EHHPS had our first round of the Rosebowl alongside Imagez, Stoke Poges and hosted on Zoom by Maidenhead.
Five EHHPS members watched the evening which was ably judged by the very gentlemanly Colin Southgate.
Each club submits 15 PDI images so 60 entries in total and the scores ranged from 14-20 with 3 images scoring 20. The final results were incredibly close being just one point apart.

Rick Beresford wins in Ealing Wildlife Group Awards

Congratulations to Rick Beresford whose image of a Peregrine Falcon came first in the ‘Urban Nature’ category of the Ealing Wildlife Group’s 6th Annual Photo competition. Rick’s image, together with other winners, is currently on display in Walpole Park.

Ron Wake Trophy: Amanda Wright Reports

On Tuesday evening (27th September) , Emmanuel, Dennis and I watched Kevin Day judge the Ron Wake held at Harrow Camera Club and attended by 5 clubs, Pinner, Field End, Watford, Ealing and Harrow.

Each club was invited to submit between 7 and 10 images each by a different author and unseen in external competition. Kevin had a very difficult task on his hands trying to hold back just 10 of the 46 entries and ended up holding back 13.

Brilliant BBQ wraps up the Summer Events Season

August 20th saw the finale of the Summer Event season as Amanda Wright hosted the traditional Summer Barbecue.

Internal Competitions Secretary Emmanuel and our new President Kristin Mason oversaw the trophy presentation for last season's six monthly competitions. The photographs below are courtesy of Dennis Durack

The Inter-Federation Competition Results: Amanda Wright Reports

The results are in and I’m delighted to say the CACC didn’t do too badly at all, certainly better than in previous years.

Members will find the overall results of all three categories here but I’d like to highlight our top scorers and our club scores here too.

In the Monochrome Category the CACC came 6th overall scoring five 14’s and two 15’s. One of the 15’s was awarded a PAGB Silver Medal by judge Ralph Duckett:

Annual Awards Evening: Results 2021-2022

Following the AGM on 16 June, Internal Competition Secretary Emmanuel, announced the results of the Monthly Aggregate Competitions, which take place over the full season. There are eight competitions in each category. An author’s 7th and 8th lowest scores are discarded, and the remaining scores (out of 20) totalled for a maximum score of 120 points.

Full results will be available to members through the weekly Newsletter.

Trophies will be presented at the Summer Barbeque event.

Thursday June 9th saw the annual Millennium Competition when members vote for the best images which scored 20 in this season’s competitions.

This year there was a Tie in the Print Competition with the trophy being shared between Rick Beresford with Escheresque and Kristin Mason with Grand Central 17:30.

EHHPS vs Highcliffe & Infinity: Amanda Wright Reports

On Wednesday 11th May EHHPS had our annual friendly competition with Highcliffe and Infinity which was unusual on several levels this year:

Due to a lack of members able to attend in person we managed to persuade H&I to host on Zoom where 9 of us were able to watch.

Our judge for the evening was Louis Rumis, a previous but lapsed member of H&I who had technical issues and had to drive to a fellow member’s house in order to complete the task.

It would seem EHHPS presented him with something of a challenge as he couldn’t understand some of our images, techniques or subjects but despite this we came first……just.

Scoring was pretty close with Ealing scoring four of the six top marks of 10 and three 9.5’s

'Match a Digi' 2022 Success: Amanda Wright's Report

Five EHHPS members travelled to Pinner for Monday’s ‘Match a Digi’ competition. Rick Beresford and Amanda Wright ran things for EHHPS, whilst Dennis Durack and Kristin and Paul Mason gave heckling support.

Here is Amanda’s report on a fun and successful evening:

On Monday night Pinner hosted our first Match-a-digi event for at least 2 years, with Field End making up the trio.

Our judge for the evening was the very brave Micki Aston, although I’m not sure she was fully aware of what she was letting herself in for as this competition is well known for the chance to heckle the judge!

As usual there was joviality and good humour, made even more amusing by the fact that everyone had forgotten how to use the rather complicated scoresheet, Micki’s insistence on making the rules up as she went along and the fact that she wasn’t in fact wearing her brand new hearing aid!

The quality of images was unusually high for this event but I’m pleased to say that despite all clubs having a different final score the general consensus was that EHHPS won, hooray!

CACC Championships Day 2022: Report

Despite having put in a huge amount of preparatory work for this event, External Competitions Secretary Amanda Wright was not able to be present on the day.

Nevertheless, Dennis Durack, Kristin Mason and Paul Mason, made the journey to the new Chiltern Lifestyle Centre in Amersham for a full day’s feast of Photography. What follows is Kristin’s interim report, which will be updated later with further detail:

The Judges were:

  • Barbie Lindsay MPAGB EFIAP/s FBPE (EAF)

  • Russell Lindsay MPAGB EFIAP FBPE (EAF)

  • Pat Couder CPAGB BPE1 QPSA (SPA)

The three judges each scored out of five in all three competitions, making 15 the top possible mark for each image.

Chilterns 100

There were 218 PDI entries in this year’s competition of individually-submitted images. Scores ranged from 6-15.

EHHPS’s Rick Beresford scored the top mark of 15 for his Exploding Mushrooms; one of only 6 images that scored this highly. A tense period followed as the judges deliberated - and then deliberated some more.
Finally the results were announced and Rick won the Bronze medal.
The judges praised the natural history feel of the image and also the texture added with the explosion effect which, together with the subtle colouring of the background elevated it above the usual.

Andy Sands of XRR won the overall Best Image trophy with his superb macro image Fly with Early Morning Dew.

The Print Championship

13 Clubs from across the CACC submitted 195 images in this competition

The Print Championship was won by Watford.
Runners up were Maidenhead and Amersham
EHHPS came a creditable 6th in the Print Championship.

Martin Patten of Watford won the best image award with his excellent portrait Brown Eyed Girl

Ealing’s high scorers were:

Shaun Hodge with Marine Marie which scored 13

Paul Mason who scored 15 for Downward Curve and a 14 for A Brush with a Cactus.

The PDI Championship

Out of a mammoth 270 images, from 18 clubs, 19 images were reviewed again at the end and Best image was deservedly awarded to Fly with Early Morning Dew by Andy Sands.

The PDI Championship was won by Watford

Runners up were Oxford PS and Maidenhead

EHHPS came 11th out of 18 clubs in this section.
For EHHPS, Rick Beresford once again scored a 15 for Exploding Mushrooms.

NWFed Final: Amanda Wright Reports

The final of the NWFed took place on Saturday 19th February, with Amersham taking on Watford.

We had two judges Pat Couder who judged the starred images from across the competition and Sue Green who judged the final both from the Southern Federation.

There were 22 Starred (and nominated starred) prints (PDI’s) where EHHPS were able to submit Isolation by Nigel Glasgow and Torridon, Scottish Highlands by Dennis Durack. Sadly neither were selected in the final 3

  • Winner - Brown Eyes by Martin Patten from Watford

  • H/C - Tackling New Zealands Ardie Savea by Julie Mullins from Amersham

  • H/C - Fish On by Don Bennett from Watford

Out of the 21 Starred and nominated projected images again EHHPS had two entries, Leap Of Faith by John Alexander and She Comes In Colour Everywhere by Jacqui Sinnatt and once again we missed out on the top 3 spots.

  • H/C - The Housekeeper by Steve Bailley from Croxley

  • H/C - Acorn Weevils Mating by Andy Sands from XRR

In the final print section (18 images) the judge awarded 3 x 20’s with result

In the final PDI section (18 images) the judge seems to struggle somewhat and awarded 8 x 20’s and 4 x 19’s

Rosebowl Round 3 - Amanda Wright's Report and Results

On Thursday 3rd October EHHPS hosted on Zoom our final round of the Rosebowl where we were drawn against Windsor PS, Field End and Kidlngton CC. The judge was Rojer Weightman from Stoke Poges who had an extremely difficult task on his hands with the superb quality of images submitted and he certainly seemed to find the evening hard work.


Rojer used a very narrow band scoring between 16 - 20 with only 3 20’s and 4 19’s which given the nature of the competition (the best of the best) and 60 images in total was quite unusual. However Rojer clearly wasn’t quite so impressed with 73% of the images scoring 17 or less, awarding 20 16’s and 24 17’s.

  • The Unmade Bed by Alan Cross from Windsor (also awarded a star)

  • Into The Light by Neil Mountford also from Windsor (also awarded a star)


The four highest scorers from Ealing thankfully were

  • Shaping Up by Paul Mason scoring 19

  • Feeling Blue by Kris Mason scoring 18

  • Hawthorn Of The Minions by Shaun Hodge scoring 18

  • Ludlow Lane by Jenny Fenton scoring 18

With the score band being so narrow it was hardly surprising that all 4 clubs were separated only by 1 point

As EHHPS didn’t do so well in the first and second rounds we were never going to make the top 12 clubs and go forward to the final as the scoring is 5,3,2, and 1 in each round. We came joint 3rd in our first round (1.5) and last in the 2nd(1) and 2nd (3) in this one giving us 5.5 in total. We needed at least a 10 or more for the final.

Rosebowl Round 2: Amanda Wright's Report and results

On 7th December EHHPS had our second round of the Rosebowl Competition this time drawn against Banbury CC, Leighton Buzzard PS and the hosts Imagez CC. In this competition, historically a purely PDI Competition so the segue to Zoom is easy with each club submitting 15 images.

The judge for the evening was Chris Drury who had been given the images prior to the competition and had them on a separate screen during the judging process which was just as well because the stormy conditions that night were certainly playing havoc with my internet connection. He certainly didn’t waffle on and indeed seemed to be a man of few but interesting words.

I knew it was going to be a tough night when our first 10 images scored 16 or 17. Luckily the Masons came to our rescue with Your Move by Paul scored 19 and Duo Cosmos by Kris scored 20. Our only other top score of 18 was by Mike Lloyd with Three of A Kind. So very well done you three.

There were only 8 19’s in total and 5 20’s, the lowest score being 13 awarded to a Banbury image and with 16 16’s and 20 17’s making up the overwhelming majority of scores.


One of the stars was awarded to Imagez and the other to Leighton Buzzard and we were annoyingly pipped into 4th place by just 1 point which makes a big difference in this competition.

We are hosting the 3rd round on 3rd Feb next year and have been drawn against Windsor, Field End and Kidlington.
