CACC Championship Day: Report and Results

Amanda Wright reports on Sunday's Championship day, which saw the judging of the Chilterns Hundred, together with the Print and Projected Championships.

Championship Day was held in Amersham yesterday (Sunday 19th March) and Paul and Kristin Mason, Ania and myself attended a full afternoon of images.

Executive Summary:  EHHPS came 4th in both the Projected and Print Competitions.
Eighteen Clubs entered for the Print Championship - a total of 270 images.
Twenty-three Clubs entered for the Projected Championship, making 345 images.

NWFED Final: Results

Amanda Wright reports:

The NWFED final went well on Saturday in Amersham, with Amersham beating Hemel Hempstead by just 2.5 points!

Excellent news from an EHHPS perspective is that Ania won Best Print with Hydrangea Still Life judged  by John Credland from Buckingham who is a thoroughly entertaining judge. 

A tremendous result with some fabulous photography in both the print and PDI categories.

Rosebowl Round 3: Results

On Thursday February 9th, EHHPS hosted a third round Rosebowl match against Field End Photographic Society, Croxley Camera Club and Woodley Photographic Club.

The judge was Chris Palmer and the scores were:

The judge held back eight images - five from Field End and three from Ealing, with Field End gaining the two '20's.

Results from the Dell (Monochrome) and Pietruski (Colour) competitions which were closely contested at a well-attended meeting on 2 February.  The warmly received judge was Julia Cleaver.

New CACC Role for Amanda Wright

Congratulations to Amanda Wright, EHHPS Portfolio Secretary, on becoming Federation Competition Officer for the CACC.  

Amanda explains: "This basically means I will be collating all the entries of both prints and PDI's, with the help of Ania, from clubs across the CACC for The Inter-Federation Competitions and Exhibitions event which happens once a year.  Once we have all the images a small selection team then choose which 10 images to put through to the 4 Inter-Fed comp categories (colour prints, mono prints, colour PDI's and Nature)."

Workshop: How to Win Photography Competitions

EHHPS's own Amanda Wright is one of three renowned judges who were asked what they look for in an award-winning image.  

Built on their feedback, Trade Secrets Live (Amersham Studios) have constructed a workshop entitled 'How to win Photography Competitions.'  The workshop will be run by John Humphrey - a recent well-received speaker at EHHPS -  and Simon Ellingworth.

Rosebowl: Second Round Results

Tuesday evening’s second round Rosebowl competition was well attended by EHHPS, with Karen Helle, Dennis Durack, Mike Roberts, and Kristin and Paul Mason making the effort to join external Competitions Secretary Amanda Wright for the 120 mile round trip to Witney, who were hosting ourselves and XRR.

Our group was at times perplexed by judge Alan Copeland’s comments; certainly several of our images which had been successful on previous occasions were marked down for this competition.   Our highest score was 18 which Karen achieved with “Last Kiss of Summer” (although Alan was concerned that there was no actual kissing involved) and Paul with “Hung Up On Him”.

In the event, Witney stormed to victory with 273 points, 25 points ahead of EHHPS, with XRR second on 262.

We very much look forward to redressing the balance when we host the next round against Field End PS, Croxley CC and Woodley PC on the 9th of February in the Town Hall.

We're Older than we Thought

We thought - as our website claims - that EHHPS (or at least the original Ealing Photographic Society) was founded in 1892.  However, after some research and assistance from the Borough Archivist, Dr Jonathan Oates,  it turns out we are a couple of years out.  A notice in the Middlesex County Times for July 19th 1890 reads:

"Ealing Photographic Society. - A meeting of those interested in this society will be held at the Victoria Hall on Thursday 24th inst., at eight p.m. to approve rules, enrol members, and elect officers for the year.  The provisional committee invite the attendance of all those who have taken an interest in the subject."

The following week’s newspaper reports on the meeting, and gives the names of the committee, including that of the first President, Mr H.W. Peal whose photograph, taken in 1891, is in the Borough Archive.

We will add a History page to this site in the near future.

Chiltern Imagez Print Exhibition 2016 preview

A number of EHHPS members have entered prints into the Chiltern Imagez event.  We have received this reminder from Stan McCartin:

"We have had a good entry for this exhibition and I would like to remind you of the Preview and Commentary by this year's selector, Jay Charnock FRPS, this Sunday 4th December at 7 for 7:30 until 9pm.

This free event will be held at Imagez Camera club, Weston Turville Village Hall, School Approach, Main Street, Weston Turville, HP22 5RW.  There is ample free parking at the club.  "

RPS Successes for John Clare

EHHPS member John Clare, LRPS, has had a double success at the Royal Photographic Society this month. First, his photograph 'Delhi Chai Seller' was chosen as one of just 30 images in the RPS Travel Print Exhibition and is currently on show at RPS HQ in Bath.

Then his image 'Pyramids and Sphinx' was chosen as the Travel Group 'Image of the Month'. It is now the Facebook group's cover page for November

John was also interviewed for his local TV station in Chiswick.

EHHPS Success in the North West Fed. Competition

Round D1 of the NW Fed competition took place on Monday 17th October, hosted by Hemel Hempstead.  Ealing were up against Hemel and Chesham, and the judge was Mark Buckley-Sharp.

Lawrence Graham-Leigh

Sad news from Amanda Wright about Lawrence, who ran 'Artmaster Gallery' used by many in EHHPS for picture mounting and framing:

"It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Lawrence Graham-Leigh passed away on Friday evening. Although the FB drive to raise money for desperately needed treatment was surpassed, sadly it came too late as Lawrence was by then too ill. He leaves behind a wife and four year old son and was a true gentleman who would always go the extra mile.

RIP Lawrence."

EHHPS Success in the Ron Wake Competition

Last night was the Ron Wake selection at Harrow for which Ania kindly took in images on my behalf. Seven clubs enter 7 prints each, one per author and 20 were to be selected by judge Roger Reynolds.

EHHPS had 5 images accepted which I think is a first!
