TALK | Simon Caplan "Out of the Dark"

Simon has recently been profiled in the RPS “Digit” magazine and this presentation will be on his light-painted still life images. The talk starts by giving members a basic introduction to the concept and development of still life art and how it is has been adopted as a genre by photographers since the early days of photography. Simon will then introduce members to some of the contemporary still life photographers who he admires and have influenced him before taking us through the development of his own work and light-painted images that he is currently doing.

Biography:

London-born Simon Caplan has been resident in Bristol in the South West of England for over 17 years. He lives in Downend in the north of the city with his partner Meril.
After a 33 year career in journalism, public relations and communications, he took (very) early retirement in 2009 and now splits his time between photography and voluntary work.
Simon's shoots with Canon 5D Mark 2 and Sony A6400 cameras. He owns a range of lenses but particularly enjoys using prime lenses, notably his Canon EFII f1.8 50mm and his Canon 100mm Macro. He shoots in RAW format and processes images in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
As well as taking his unique urban details, abstracts and 'found' still life images, Simon shoots environmental portraits - using Canon Speedlite flash units. He either mounts the flash guns on lighting poles and diffuses the light with an umbrella or softbox or uses on-camera bounce flash when the circumstances and surroundings suit.
Simon is a member and a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS). He is also a member of Bristol's Reflex Camera Club and the Bristol Creatives group.
