Landscape Photographer of the Year 2017: Coming to EHHPS Soon

Our talks season got off to an excellent start when our first speaker, Andy Sands, won the Ron Wake Trophy.

But it gets even better:  our speaker on November 9th, Benjamin Graham, as just won Landscape Photographer of the year 2017

This is Benjamin's second visit to EHHPS, and he also hosted an early morning photoshoot for us in Paddington.  Congratulations to Benjamin, and we look forward to a great turnout.

New 'Portrait' Category for the 2017-18 Season

At the recent AGM there was general support for a proposal to move ‘Portraits’ from the Open category into a separate, additional category.  The Committee proposes to adopt the proposal for the 2017-18 season, and will review the success or otherwise of the move before adopting the new category long term.

In the coming season there will therefore be three categories for each competition - both Print and Projected. An overall limit of four images across the categories per competition applies as previously, with a maximum three images in any one category:

Set Subject: - there is no change to this category.

Portrait:  This covers any image where the main subject is a person or people who are posing or otherwise acting under the general direction and control of the photographer, whether in a studio or location, lit or otherwise.   ‘Street’ Photography and similar observational/candid images of people are not included in this category, and would remain in the ’Open’ category.

Open: This category includes any image other than those covered by the Portrait category, including ‘Street’ Photography or similar observational/candid images of people where they are not under the direction or control of the photographer.

The decision relating to the appropriate category for ‘People’ pictures is left to the author, based on the guidelines above.  However, should a judge feel that an image has been entered into an inappropriate category they may, at their discretion, mark down the image.

PAGB 'Masters of Print' Competition

Amanda Wright is very excited about a new Print Competition and associated exhibition from the PAGB:

There are three categories:

  • Monochrome Prints
  • Colour Prints
  • Nature Prints

Each author may enter a maximum of five unmounted prints overall (sizes in the Rules - linked below). After closed judging, 50-60 prints will be selected for exhibition, maximum one print per author.  Whilst earlier images are not excluded, the Judges and Selectors will give priority to work which has not already been widely exhibited.  The exhibition prints will be mounted by the PAGB in 60cm x 60cm frames.

Further details

The closing date for on-line entries is Saturday 21st October. The full timetable is here

Town Hall Move Postponed (again)

We have been informed by Ealing Town Hall that the Town Hall Redevelopment has been postponed again, and that we are now free to stay until May 31st 2018.  There were only two events scheduled for June 2018, including the AGM which we held successfully this year in the Grange.  The Committee have therefore agreed that we should take up the extended option and effectively now have the whole of the 2017-2018 season in the Town Hall.

We will however continue to pursue options as outlined at the AGM in order to have our new home in place well aheah of the following season starting in September 2018.

Ralph's Funeral - 21st July at Mortlake

Amanda just received this message from Jonah at Northfields CC regarding Ralph Gould.

Dear All,

As many of you know, Ralph Gould sadly passed away last week after a short illness.

His funeral is at Mortlake Crematorium on Friday 21st July at 11:20. (I would suggest arriving a little earlier than that, nearer 11). I spoke with his wife, Pam, today and she extends a warm welcome to members of both Northfields Camera Club and Ealing & Hampshire House Photographic Society. There will be a buffet and drinks afterwards at The Ship which is a very short walk from the Crematorium. I understand that parking is available behind and it is possible to leave cars at the Crematorium for the drinks afterwards.

I hope some of you may be able to attend.

This Year's Winners

The winners of this year's aggregate competitions were announced at the AGM, this year held in the pub due to the town hall being used for the general election.

The projected open was won by Karen Helle. Second was Mike Lloyd, third Shaun Hodge.

The projected set subject was won by Irena Farrell.  Sadly she was not present to receive her prize. Paul Mason came second, followed by Kristin Mason in third.

The print open was won by Shaun Hodge, followed by Karen Helle and Paul Mason.

Printed set subject was shared by Shaun Hodge and Paul Mason in joint first place. Emmanuel Pappadopoulos was third.

The Switch trophy, voted by the previous three winners for service to the club, was won by Dennis Durack.

Congratulations to them all.

Highcliffe May 2017

Amanda Wright Reports:

On Wednesday a small but dedicated posse of Ealing and Hampshire House members (Karen and her very entertaining male model Michael, Paul, Kris, Ania and Amanda) made our way down to The New Forest by way of The Grange in Northington, near Alresford in Hampshire. This once grand country estate, now under English Heritage, had clearly seen better days and was under construction but was a very pleasant, peaceful spot and the weather was perfect for a photo shoot with Michael. I managed to sneak into the house unseen where builders were working, grabbed a couple of pics (Urban style) and escaped just in time to not get kicked out!! Meanwhile, Paul, Kris and Karen were having to convince the owner it was not a commercial shoot, despite apparently looking professional. Soon afterwards, we headed off down the road to pretty East Stratton for an excellent lunch. Making our way down to The Hotel we stopped at Furzey Gardens in the New Forest where we came across a fabulous array of brightly coloured flowers and shrubs, a very friendly Robin and three even friendlier Donkeys, one of which seemed to want to get in the car and come with us!

That evening our competition went very well, the judge Paul Bradley from the Isle of Wight seemed a little perplexed by the amount of portraiture on offer that evening, he was clearly much more comfortable with animals and landscapes but nevertheless EHHPS won the PDI’s by 4 points and lost the prints by only half a point, making an overall win by 3.5 points!! A very close run thing.

Our top scorers were in the PDI’s Mike Lloyd with The Fighter, Burgess Taylor with The Butchers, Amanda Hodge with Savannah Elephant and Amanda Wright with Brave Face and in the prints Michael Jaworski with Night Lights and Emmanuel with Time It Is.

After a good nights sleep and hearty Full English we had a brief stop in a garden centre then headed down to the coast at Keyhaven where we took photos of boats and lighthouses for a change, the weather was mixed but stayed dry and mostly warm, another excellent pub lunch and then we headed back to Ealing just in time for our final print comp of the year, exhausted but exhilarated.

Keith Adams

It was with great sadness that we heard the news that Keith Adams, a longstanding member of EHHPS, died on Saturday 22 April.

Keith was a member of Ealing for more than 30 years; during that time he held most positions on committee and was President twice. He worked tirelessly to promote the club and help new members with their photography. He set up a longstanding friendship with Highcliff and Infinity Camera Club on the south coast – in fact, the away team still visit annually to compete against Highcliff.

Keith was also a great socialiser, and organized many club visits to local restaurants. Together with his wife Liz, he helped run numerous club barbecues, bonfire night bashes and picnics, which raised substantial funds to help the club continue to prosper.

Keith achieved much photographic success at both club level and in international competitions. He was a member of the RPS, having achieved an LRPS at a very early stage in his photography, and had numerous acceptances in RPS competitions. Keith was also a judge on the CACC circuit, and his judging ability meant that he was never short of bookings.

He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him at Ealing and through local CACC clubs.

Our deepest sympathy goes to Liz.

Election 2017: Car Parking at Ealing Town Hall

We have received the following information from Ealing Town Hall:

"As you will likely be aware, the Parliamentary elections will be taking place on Thursday 8th June 2017. In order to accommodate the election count, a marquee will once again be erected over the Perceval House car park once again which means that the whole car park will be closed and out of action from Monday 29th May through until Wednesday 14th June inclusive.

If you have a meeting or class taking place within Ealing Town Hall during the car park closure period, I thought it would be helpful to provide you with some information on alternative parking locations that you can pass onto anyone that may be attending.

The nearest council car parks to the Town Hall are:

Springbridge Road multi-storey car park
Springbridge Road
Ealing W5 2AB (approx. 5 min walk)

Arden Road surface car park
Arden Road / Uxbridge Road
West Ealing
W13 8RP (approx. 10 min walk)

Both car parks are open to the public 24hrs a day and are available at no charge to use after 6pm during the week. Full details of all council car parks can be found on the website - http://www.ealing.gov.uk/info/200332/parking/640/car_parks  Alternatively, there is free street parking after 4pm on Gordon Road (at the top of Longfield Avenue). The loading bay at the rear of Ealing Town Hall will remain open and unaffected."

NWFED Final: Results

Amanda Wright reports:

The NWFED final went well on Saturday in Amersham, with Amersham beating Hemel Hempstead by just 2.5 points!

Excellent news from an EHHPS perspective is that Ania won Best Print with Hydrangea Still Life judged  by John Credland from Buckingham who is a thoroughly entertaining judge.

A tremendous result with some fabulous photography in both the print and PDI categories.
