Rosebowl Round 2 Results and Report

Amanda Wright reports on the Second round match in the Rosebowl Trophy, hosted by EHHPS on Thursday 5th December:

Last night Ealing hosted our Round 2 of the Rosebowl Competition against clubs New City and Marlow. The 45 digital images were judged by Alan Colegrave who more than once mentioned that he was struggling to think of things to say as the standard of images was so high that he couldn’t fault them. That said he did manage to provide us with a broad range of marks.

The final scores were:

EHHPS 1st with 264
New City 2nd with 259
Marlow 3rd with 247

Top scorers with 20 points were:

Peace Pagoda Dawn by Simon Raynor from New City
A Brush With A Cactus by Paul Mason EHHPS also taking one of the stars
Positive Thinking by Shaun Hodge, EHHPS
Out Of The Grey by Kristin Mason, EHHPS taking the other star

The XRR Visions Results are In

A small group of us ventured north to Watford on Wednesday 20th November for the XRR Visions competition.

EHHPS entered a team comprising Shaun Hodge, Dennis Durack and John Clare. In addition, Phil Dean, Kristin Mason and Paul Mason entered as individuals only.

184 pre-judged images from 92 photographers were shown in two consecutive slideshows, followed by a live critique of the 92 tie-break images by guest judge, David Steel DPAGB, from the East Anglian Federation.

All results are published here
(Sort by clicking on column headers, click an image title to preview the image).

Unfortunately, as a team EHHPS came well down the results table. The high scoring images were predominantly Wildlife and Landscape. It seemed that the Judge was seeking something more in ‘People’ images.

EHHPS highest scoring image was Marie by Shaun Hodge - scoring 18

NWFed Match A3: Results and Report

Amanda Wright reports on the match which took place on Monday 4th November at Amersham

Amersham played hosts to the third and final round of Group A’s North West Fed with Hemel Hempstead and EHHPS on Monday evening which was judged by Martin Patten LRPS CPAGB BPE*

The scores were mostly very disappointing once again for Ealing and we came 3rd despite achieving 3 20’s and bagging 3 of the 4 allocated stars.

Third round scores on the night were

PRINTS

Amersham 93
Ealing 86
Hemel 85

PDIs

Amersham 93
Hemel 89
Ealing 86

Ealing’s top scorers were:

Out of The Grey by Kristin Mason (print): 20 and a star
Hippy Life by Shaun Hodge (PDI): 20 and a star
Skirting Fantasy by Paul Mason (PDI) 20 and a star

So with those totals added to the previous two rounds the overall final scores were

1st Amersham 591
2nd Ealing 561
3rd Hemel 555

Amersham will therefore go forward to the Semi Final against the winning club from Group C on 21st January.

The Final will be on Saturday 22nd Feb 2020 where our starred images will be judged again for a chance to win best print or best PDI of the competition.

NWFed Match A2: Results and Report

Amanda Wright reports on Monday’s (21 October) match which for the second time saw EHHPS facing Hemel Hempstead and Amersham:

Hemel Hempstead hosted round 2 of the NW Fed last night judged by Chris Sargeant and with Judy and Mark Buckley-Sharp present.

In the prints round EHHPS came a disappointing 3rd scoring 83, Hemel Hempstead 2nd with 87 and Amersham 1st with 92.

The judging appeared to be somewhat random with traditional views and details missed, the lowest score was 16 with two 20’s and both the stars awarded to Amersham. Ealing could only muster a top score of 18 for Paul Mason’s A Brush With A Cactus but this by no means represented the quality of the images EHHPS submitted. Personally I thought the criticisms were half hearted.

In the PDI’s again the lowest competition score was a 16 but EHHPS fared much better with Hemel scoring 88 and both Amersham and EHHPS scoring 90. Once again two 20’s and both stars were awarded to Amersham. EHHPS scored three 19’s which were In The Bell Tower by Paul Mason, Marine by Shaun Hodge and Before Sunrise by Dennis Durack.

The final round will be held at Amersham in two weeks time on Monday 4th November but it’s not looking hopeful.

NWFed First Round Result

Amanda Wright reports on Thursday’s (October 3rd) opener against Hemel and Amersham:

Thursday night saw the External Competitions new season kick off at The Brentham Club when EHHPS played host to Amersham and Hemel Hempstead PS judged by Paul Burwood LRPS.

As usual some of the scores raised a few eyebrows but his comments were generally fair, the standard was unsurprisingly pretty high and the rounds were surprisingly close.

Print Scores

Ealing 109
Amersham 112

There were four 20’s awarded:

Black Mount by Dennis Durack (EHHPS)
Skateboard Action by Jim Turner (Hemel) also a Star

Ron Wake Memorial Trophy heads to Watford

The final of the Ron Wake Memorial Trophy opened Harrow Camera Club’s season on Tuesday evening (3rd September). The winning image was “This is Me”, as six shot composite by Charlotte Dwyer of Watford CC.

Before turning his attention to the final, judge Kevin Day gave a fascinating talk on a documentary shoot he had undertaken, following a group of aid workers helping refugees in Greece.

Kevin’s judging was, as ever, entertaining and perceptive. Although EHHPS’s Shaun Hodge won last year’s competition, this time EHHPS had only a single image, Amanda Wright’s I Like this Blue which made it through to the final twenty. I found myself wondering if Kevin had judged the selection round, whether perhaps we may have seen more of our work in the final.
