COMPETITION: PANEL OF PRINTS
Alliterative as the event title is, you can submit in either print or projected images.
Picking up on last year’s suggestion from our judge, Kevin Day, we would welcome a statement of intent relating to each panel. Nothing too arduous; just something which will guide the judge on what unifies your panel of three images.

Judge: Kevin Day
MEMBERS' EVENING: Your photo stories
(This week on Zoom as The Brentham Club are holding their own AGM)
At this zoom session we’re going to throw the judges’ rule book out, and share our most powerful photo stories/memories. Forget about being technically good – tonight we want to be regaled with interesting tales!
Please get involved in any of these ways:
Share photos that have a strong narrative within them.
Tell the story of why and/or how you took a photo that’s important to you. What’s the story that led you to take it?
You can even go back to old film photos taken decades ago, and scan them or take a photo of them to submit. Maybe they’ll reveal a story about how life once was.
Share photos that simply have a powerful place in your memory. Putting camera club efforts to one side, the photos we take are almost always about creating memories, and many of them are funny, weird, poignant and so on.
You can submit up to 8 photos, in the usual way, on Photo-entry. Please start the title of each image with a number, to show your priority order. We can then make sure everyone gets a fair crack at the whip if there are lots of photos… or if the stories are shaggy dog ones!
HOSTING : MATCH-A-DIGI
An interclub competition where heckling the judge is positively encouraged!
Three teams take turns to offer an image. However, in each round, the other two teams attempt to match the picture content as closely as possible from a limited selection of images. A point is given for a close match and a further point for the best quality image.
Judge: Alan Taberer
COMPETITION : DELL & PIETRUSKI
Named after a couple of illustrious previous members, these are competitions for colour images (Pietruski) and mono (Dell) images. This year, we have simplified the evening and Dell will a mono print competition and Pietruski will be a colour PDI competition. You are, as usual, subject to a maximum of 4 images total on the night and a maximum of 3 in one category.
So, on the night:
Print Dell (Mono)
PDI Pietruski (Colour)
Judge: TBC
(NB: Next year, we’ll swap and Pietruski will be print and Dell will be PDI competitions.)
EXTERNAL COMPETITION : 3-WAY COMPETITION
A bit like Match-a-Digi, this fun competition is hosted by Tring. Heckling the judge is a given…
There is, a few doors away, a very nice Italian restaurant called Storia which a few of of may visit prior to the event. If you would like to join, please let Kristin know.
TALK | DAMON GUY "Abstract photography"
Welcoming Damon Guy back to EHHPS, this time without his judge’s hat and to give his talk on Abstract photography.

The final competition of the year as we, as a club, vote for the best image out of all of those scoring 20 throughout the year’s aggregate club competitions.

TALK | CHRIS PALMER "The Eloquent Landscape"
We are delighted to welcome Chris back to the Club, this time as presenter.
Chris writes:
The title is primarily a reference to my experience when working in the landscape, to the connection I sense and feel with the natural world around me, and the elements within it. They speak to me. Through my photography I would hope that my images also communicate with the viewer too. The talk embraces four sections, with significant content taken in Iceland, and much closer to home on Stoke Common.
About me:
I 've been actively involved in club photography since 1979. I gained an Associateship and subsequent Fellowship of the RPS, serve as Chair on the RPS Visual Art (A & F) Panel, as a panel member on Landscape, and provide advice at Distinction Advisory days, and one2one’s. A busy national PAGB judge and popular Fotospeed lecturer, I have visited more than 275 different camera clubs, and judged many regional, national and international exhibitions. I hold a Distinction of the PAGB and was pleased to receive an APAGB award for my services to photography. I have also had success and gained awards in international exhibitions while earning my AFIAP and EFIAP distinctions. I am delighted to be a member of the prestigious London Salon. Now retired from working as an air traffic controller, I am a member of Amersham Photographic Society.

This is the last of a series of 5 competitions, organised by Tring & District Camera club with 14 clubs participating.
Our External Competition Secretary (Amana) will curate our entry and the competition will be held over Zoom.
Peter Cox (Chair of T&DCC) writes:
There will be two judges who will pre score the images independently and then meet to agree the final scores.
We are fortunate to have two wonderful judges:
Maria Leekblade – a highly respected photographer and judge from South of England who is known for her understanding of creative photography – Maria had great feedback on her judging of this competition last year.
Tony Oliver - another highly respected judge and photographer from the Southern Region, Tony had planned to be a judge last year but due to illness had to take a break but we are delighted that he is back to full health and is with us this year.

TALK: MARGARET SORAYA "The Mindful Landscape"
Margaret Soraya is a Scottish artist, photographer and writer living on the Isle of Harris in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. Back in 2020 when lockdown was very much a thing, Margaret shared some of her land and seascapes along with reflections on her attitude to creativity and photography. We are delighted to welcome her back to EHPPS.
Here website is margaretsoraya.com
Margaret writes:
The stillness and being surrounded by sea and nature on Harris is at the heart of my creative work. I created all my creative retreats, online membership, and yearly festival from a belief that creativity is vital for well-being.
Being surrounded by like-minded creatives enriches our lives and encourages us to take time to be creative, so I love bringing people together, to quiet beautiful places to retreat and absorb nature together.
Photowalk to Wapping Old Stairs
Joint meeting with Northfields Camera Club
Organised by Annie Hackett
A number of old stone stairs lead down to the Thames from Wapping High Street, and at low tide you can get onto the 'beaches' with views towards Tower Bridge. There are good options for gritty urban landscapes, especially 'intimate' ones as the Thames walls are covered in moss and ancient stains, and dotted with relics of the fishing/shipping industries. With an intimate scapes competition coming up soon, the outing might yield some good entries.
This is a joint workshop with Northfields Camera Club.
Please email Annie Hackett to let her know if you are interested, so she can give you the exact meeting point and also some essential notes on the location.
TALK | Jeanette Lenden "Smartphone Photography"
We all have an amazing camera in our pockets - we just need to learn how to use them properly! Whether you want to take better holiday photos, want to take better content for your social media, or just generally improve your photography, this will be the smartphone masterclass for you.
Jeanette/Jet is the founder and Creative Director of Jet Black Squares. Combining her former teaching career in the East End of London with a more recent corporate photography business of 13 years, she has created a hub for everything creative surrounding the smartphone. Her passion is showing people of all ages how to get the best photos from their phone - she believes that photography should be available to everyone and not just those who have a ‘fancy camera’. Jet’s infectious enthusiasm is evident for all to see, whether teaching the CEO of an international company, presenting to a conference of 100+ clients within the travel industry or an 85 year old grandma. She can often be seen whizzing around the streets of Hertfordshire on Basil, her gorgeous Vespa scooter.
MEMBERS' SHOW N' SHARE / INTIMATE SCAPES PREVIEW
A combined evening this week:
We are asking for suggestions of images that the club can use for our entry into the Intimate Scapes competition run by Tring & District Camera Club. This will be the last year of this competition and we’d really like to give all those other clubs a good run!
Offering images: Rick has created a repository on PhotEntry. It's called "Intimate Landscape Repository 2026" and can be found under the "External Competition Candidates 2026" Competition Group.
This will also be an opportunity to share images for which you would like feedback from members. These can be work in progress, images that you feel were judged over-harshly (or over generously?) or images requiring ideas and input on post production.
CHRISTMAS SOCIAL
The traditional get-together with fellow club members. Don’t forget partners are welcome!
Venue: Côte Brasserie, Ealing Broadway
Time: 8pm
PLEASE NOTE:
Because several members of the club couldn’t make the usual Thursday date, we have now changed this social event to be on FRIDAY, 12th DECEMBER.
The menu can be viewed here. Please do let Kristin know if you would like to attend if you haven’t already done so. Also let us know what your menu choices will be as we need to book these in advance. We will take the money for the food beforehand (look out for the email) so that, on the night, the only thing to be paid will be your own drinks.

HOSTING : ROSEBOWL ROUND 2
In this round we are up against Stoke Poges and Pinner.
Last year, we made the Final. After the first round this year we are in catch-up mode. Do come along and support your club.
Amanda Wright’s report on our first round match is on our website.
Further details of the competition are on the CACC website.
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES : LIGHTROOM
Rarely do we show pictures literally straight out of the camera and we have our own individual ways of post production. Indeed, images taken in the same conditions by different photographers will often look completely different from one another, once they have been through the editing process.
The combination of Lightroom and Photoshop, often used with some plug-in extras has revolutionised the ‘digital darkroom’ and in this evening’s session, we will look at a few images and compare techniques for bringing out the best that an image has to offer.
We’ll have a couple of laptops so feel free to bring an image or two for us to work on. Perhaps you have a photograph that you think may have promise but haven’t yet got around to thinking how to treat? Or maybe a judge has already critiqued and you would like to try what they suggested?
We will work on RAW files so bring images on a memory stick please, so we can work in full resolution. JPEG images are also welcome but there are fewer options (but not none!)
TALK : Andy Sands "Natural History - Birds & Macro"
Another evening with Andy Sands - Birds and Macro”
We are delighted to welcome back Andy to the club to give us one of his stunning presentations on natural history.
Definitely not to be missed!
You can find out more about Andy on his website.
PHOTOWALK : Pub Crawl in the City
PHOTOWALK - pubcrawl in the City
Join us for twilight street photography around some characterful pubs in the City of London. The aim is to capture atmospheric shots of city drinkers, or shadowy figures in the narrow surrounding streets.
We will set off from Ealing at 5pm and start our shoot at London Bridge, where you can join us if starting at Ealing doesn't suit you. If the light is kind to us, we will spend some time taking shots of sunset (6.20pm) on the river, with views of Tower Bridge, the Shard, Walkie Talkie etc. We will then head into some of the small cobbled streets of the City, visiting three different photogenic pubs that have well lit exteriors and should be humming with activity on a Thursday evening.
We will finish up at Leadenhall Market, which looks fabulous at night and has plenty of nearby places to eat, which is what we'll do at 8pm. We should be back in Ealing by 10pm. Please email Annie Hackett if you would like to come along, so she can keep you up to date with precise logistics.

The first of our four print competitions of the season. If you would like to enter, but would like advice on printing options for your images, please get in touch with a member of the committee.

TALK: CAROLINE PREECE- "Street Photography"
Welcome back from the summer break and a warm EHHPS welcome to Caroline Preece who will set us up for the new season with her inspiring talk on street photography.
Street Photography - How to feel the fear, do it anyway, and get great images
Caroline writes:
People have often said to me that they really like my street photography, but then the next words which follow are something along the lines of I am not brave enough to do it myself. What they don’t realise is that I am not brave and I still get butterflies…..and this is normal. Many top street photographers still have nerves.
In this talk I hope to take you on a journey which will look at what street photography is; what makes a great street image; some simple technical stuff on how to capture and produce your street images; and some thoughts on style. I will also talk about confidence and share techniques and tools which will help you manage your nerves and enable you to go out and get great street images.
SUMMER EVENT : BARBECUE
Hosted this year by Kristin and Paul, this is a welcome opportunity to kick back in the summer sun (here’s hoping!) with fellow members.
It would be appreciated if you are able to bring a dish (let Kristin know what, so we don’t get lots of the same thing).
Please also bring whatever you plan to drink.
Cost will be £15 per person towards BBQ items.
SUMMER EVENT : LAVENDER FIELDS
Hitchin Lavender fields
As well as the lovely lavender fields, which should be at their best, there happens to be a fabulous cafe that serves a nice lunch and a number of rather gorgeous cakes at tea time. Ticket price is not yet announced for late July, but will probably be around £15. Some of us will be going in time for lunch, making a long day of it as the fields are at their most photogenic in the early evening (and less crowded too). Again, we will be driving in at least 2 cars, so if you think 1pm to possibly 8pm is too long a day, there will probably be flexibility to have a carload going for a shorter time span. Please email Annie if you are interested.
We’ll be leaving Ealing at about 12.30pm
SUMMER EVENT : WINE TASTING
Martin Creedy’s wine tasting has become a wonderful EHHPS summer fixture and we are delighted that he has offered to hold a further one this year.
Martin writes:
Wine Tasting 2025
Return to the Rhône
Way back in 2011 I hosted my very first Wine Tasting for the EHHPS summer season. I started with my favourite wine region - The Rhône Valley - so, for my 14th wine tasting I have decided to revisit the Rhône.
In those 14 years I have a new set of favourite Rhône wines to share and hopefully some new favourites for you as well.
Date: Saturday 19th July
Time: 7:30pm
Cost: £30
There will of course be a stunning selection of cheeses and sourdough bread 🙂
Please let Martin know by 7th July if you would like to attend
SUMMER EVENT : MARLOW
An afternoon of photographing one of England's prettiest riverside market towns, afternoon tea, perhaps a bit of shopping on the side, and probably finishing with a drink/meal. We will be driving there in at least two cars, so getting a lift with someone should be easy.
We’ll be leaving Ealing at 1.30pm
Dinner will be at The Oarsman at 6.30pm
Please email Annie if you would like to go.
